Originally built in 1988, the former HARAJUKU QUEST was rebuilt and reopened in 2025 as a new commercial complex. The façade facing Omotesando is urban and chic, but the Harajuku exterior, exposed to a mixed area of retail shops, alleyways, and residences, is scaled down. The lighting aims to emphasize the design intent and capture both sides and expressions of the building; the Omotesando face being very vertical and the Harajuku view opening up to a continuous ground-level sprawl. The lighting also aims to clearly define areas of circulation while also accentuating “Passages,” or covered walkways passing through the building, and underground levels with rammed earth walls, inspired by geological strata.
